Hetzner Online hands over cheque for 148.000 Euro to welfare organisation
Gunzenhausen/Berlin, August 2010. At the South African embassy in Berlin German actress Alexandra Neldel received a cheque on behalf of Habitat for Humanity Germany to the tune of 148.000 Euro from international webhosting company Hetzner Online AG. This donation will finance all 15 houses under construction on a building project in the Western Cape, South Africa.Hetzner Online donated all setup fees received from new server orders during the Football World Cup 2010 to the Youth Build Project 2010 in South Africa. „We took the occasion of the World Cup to draw attention amidst all the hustle and bustle to the extreme poverty in South Africa. With the Youth Build Project 2010 we could provide help where it was needed the most“, said Christian Fitz, Marketing Manager from Hetzner Online AG, at the cheque hand-over.
Besides the houses financed by Hetzner Online AG in the Western Cape, in June and July 2010 Habitat for Humanity built a further 30 houses in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal. The project provided 45 families with a total of 230 family members with new, secure homes.
„With this donation Hetzner Online AG has shown exemplary social responsibility. We hope that this will set a precedent for other businesses, which will lead to many other needy families receiving a roof over their heads“ stated Manuela Kikillus, Director of Habitat for Humanity Germany.
All the houses of Youth Build 2010 were built by volunteer workers from South Africa of different social backgrounds. 900 volunteers helped energetically on a daily basis, together with the future inhabitants of the houses. This intended exchange between different social groups cultivates an understanding of life in the townships and raises awareness of their difficult circumstances. The work experience and social engagement increases the young people’s job opportunities.
